How many homes can be powered by 1MW (megawatt)?

The average home in Alberta uses 7200 kWh/per year. If 1 MW of solar were installed next to Edmonton at a 40 degree tilt angle, facing true south, it would power up to 183 Edmonton area homes. That same system installed  near Calgary would power up to 200 homes due to southern Alberta's better solar resources.

the average number of homes powered per MW of PV varies due to a number of factors including:

  • Average sunshine
  • Average household electricity consumption
  • Temperature
  • Soiling on panels
  • Tilt angles and orientation
  • Use of trackers
